Radically feminist and breathtakingly beautiful: 'April' by Dea Kulumbegashvili
Radically feminist and breathtakingly beautiful: this year we have selected 'April' by celebrated Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili, whose debut 'Beginning' has already screened at the IFFMH, as our Center Piece. 'April' already caused a sensation at its world premiere in Venice, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
With her second feature film 'April', Dea Kulumbegashvili takes us into rural eastern Georgia and the secluded life of her main character Nina. She is a midwife in a small clinic somewhere near the Caucasus. She repeatedly struggles with the demands of life. Only her profession gives her stability and meaning. But after a tragic death, not only her work in the hospital is investigated, but also her actions in the surrounding farming villages. This puts her professional future, indeed her entire existence, in jeopardy. The extremely dense atmosphere, the impressively beautiful images, sensual textures and striking sounds make 'April' an outstanding cinematic work of art.
