When does the capacity to suffer turn into resistance? When is death followed by resurrection? This artfully told modern legend from southern Africa is the festival hit of the season!

The eighty-year-old widow Mantoa is done with her life. She longs for the beyond and is preparing her own funeral. But an unexpected challenge re-awakens her life force. She rebels. Resists. Life, death, people, God. In the end, she swims against the tide.

Little by little, the audience falls under the spell of director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’ fascinatingly rhythmic debut. His storytelling is varied and multifaceted: sometimes sober, sometimes highly emotional; one moment lyrical, the next almost documentary. By drawing from ancient myths as well as from avant-garde traditions, the film develops a language all its own. Its images are so sensual and artistic that one can only describe them as masterly.

This powerful debut has conquered the world from Venice to Sundance – now us!
