Gossip and scandal in New York: a biting social satire with an all-female cast, and a milestone of Hollywood cinema.

While receiving a manicure, Sylvia Fawler learns that the husband of her friend Mary Haines is having an affair with a perfume saleswoman. She immediately spreads the news, then sends the unsuspecting Mary to the same manicurist. Afterwards, the devastated Mary wants a divorce.

George Cukor’s comedy is a fast-paced ensemble film that, by starring Joan Crawford and others, features some of the biggest Hollywood stars of the time. Designed by the legendary Adrian, the costumes play a central role. The film culminates in a fashion show that, unlike the rest of the film, was shot in vivid Technicolor.
