Three men and the abysses of a supposedly civilizing project – a South American western about a state’s cruel colonial origins.

Chile at the beginning of the 20th century. A large landowner commissions three men to survey the expanse of his land and scout out a direct route to the Atlantic Ocean. The party consists of a Chilean “half-breed”, a North American mercenary, and a heinous British lieutenant. Tensions between the three are inevitable. At some point, they come up against the indigenous population. What happens next defies description. - ›The Settlers‹ embarks on a search for the colonizing origins of a modern American state, showing how these are eventually buried under a mythology all its own. In magnificent Cinemascope-like landscape shots, the film takes up the great tradition of the US-American Western – only to use the wonderfully dirty colors of its imagery to slyly drag it through the mud.
