Sex for pay as a path to sexual liberation? Sook-Yin Lee’s hilarious adaptation of Chester Brown’s autobiographical graphic novel.

When his girlfriend suggests an open relationship, Chester Brown quickly gets the idea of hiring a sex worker. Once he’s had his first experience, he takes a liking to it and constantly seeks out new paid playmates. To the dismay of his friends, he celebrates it as a liberation from emotional baggage and false romantic notions of love.

Only director Sook-Yin Lee could make this story as screamingly funny as she does here. That’s because it is also her own. Past and present, reality and fiction, literature and film merge into a tantalizing whole.

Director

Sook Yin-Lee cannot be pinned down: she is a musician, multimedia artist, director, screenwriter, and actress. Her best-known role is as the lead in John Cameron Mitchell’s cult film ›Shortbus‹ from 2006. ›Paying For It‹ is her fifth film as a director. And her second in a year!
