Romance, affair, or actually true love? Belmondo and Girardot have to make a fateful decision.
An actress and a composer – both from France, both in relationships – meet on a film set in Hollywood. They become closer, wavering between holding back and letting go. On a road trip through the USA, they explore their feelings for each other until the moment arrives when they need to make a decision.
Annie Girardot and Jean-Paul Belmondo, the recently deceased great star of French cinema, give this intense love story a haunting undertone. Their acting is mirrored in the direction: on the one hand, easy-going, relaxed, carefree; on the other, rendering the increasing gravity of the affair and the implications of their impending decision ever more palpable. Claude Lelouch brings the central themes of his oeuvre to the fore in this emotional melodrama.
