"All arrogance and no feeling" – Margarethe von Trotta portrays a thinker who, in the midst of entrenched opinion, remained committed to the exercise of critical judgment.

In 1960, Adolf Eichmann is arrested in Argentina and brought to Jerusalem to stand trial for the central role he played in the Holocaust. Hearing the news while living as an émigré professor in the USA, Hannah Arendt offers to write an account of the trial for The New Yorker magazine. Interweaving her film with historical courtroom footage, Margarethe von Trotta recreates the story behind one of the most controversial texts of the 20th century, which identified an entirely new form of evil in the Eichmann phenomenon. ›Hannah Arendt‹ always stays close to its main character, who is brought to life by Barbara Sukowa through her unique ability to balance even the firmest determination with a suggestion of vulnerability and the deepest sensitivity with a lucid standpoint.

Director

Margarethe von Trotta's international breakthrough as a director came in 1981 with ›Marianne and Juliane‹, which won the Golden Lion in Venice. Her cinematic tributes to such historical figures as Rosa Luxemburg and Hildegard von Bingen established her as one of Germany's most renowned auteurs.
