A film about discovering one’s own body and the relationship between two sisters. Catherine Breillat’s touching and disturbing coming-of-age story.

Overweight 12-year-old Anaïs (Anaïs Reboux) is spending the summer holidays with her family in Italy. While hanging out with her pretty sister Elena (Roxane Mesquida), whom she adores, she notices her flirting with an Italian student. She then witnesses their first sexual encounter, which degenerates into an act of male manipulation and a demonstration of power. This triggers a growing anger towards her sister, which eventually gives rise to violent fantasies.

Two years after her scandalous ›Romance‹ (1999), Catherine Breillat made this film, arguably her most important work. Its shocking and provocative ending lingers in the mind for a long time afterwards.

Director

Starting with her earliest works at the end of the 1970s, the director Catherine Breillat earned herself the reputation of enfant terrible of the French cultural scene. Her films, including ›36 Fillette‹ (1988) and ›Anatomy of Hell‹ (2004), often focus on the female protagonists’ search for her sexual identity.
