›Escape Route to Marseille‹ follows the traces of German emigrants with great formal freedom. A restoration of a rarely seen film.
Taking inspiration from Anna Segher's book ›Transit‹, Ingemo Engström and Gerhard Theuring's ›Escape Route to Marseille‹ follows German emigrants who fled to southern France in 1940. The result is a hybrid film that transcends national borders, mixing fiction and documentary, as well as past and present: Katharina Thalbach and Rüdiger Vogler quote passages from the book, documentary footage shows places that Seghers passed through on her actual escape, and witnesses from the time share their stories. "The reality to be documented includes not only the official images and the memories, but also everything thought and imagined, and how these are reflected in the consciousness of the individual today." (Peter W. Jansen). Awarded the Josef von Sternberg Prize in 1977.
