Lorelei

Winning film 2020

A love against all odds. With its sincere attitude, daring embrace of the fantastic, and an unforgettable central couple, Sabrina Doyle has crafted a captivating feature debut.

Wayland is released from prison after serving a 15-year sentence. He tries to seamlessly resume his past life and belatedly fulfil his dreams. But the love of his youth, Dolores, is now a mother of three.

The way Sabrina Doyle, in her directing debut, expands this premise is astonishing on many levels. With keen perception, she constructs a microcosm inhabited by people who have almost lost all prospects. She offers her characters not only dignity but also hope. Genre conventions are repeatedly hinted at, only to be intelligently subverted. Lorelei thus starts as a gripping social drama that then develops into a magical love story. Its beating heart is formed by shooting star Jena Malone and Pablo Schreiber from The Wire.

London-born Sabrina Doyle worked at the BBC for six years after completing her studies at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.
